In the colder months starting mid-October through the end of December, the gag grouper migrate inshore were they can be caught in depths as little as 8 feet and up to 30 feet. They put up a great fight in the shallow water as they are typical to try and break you off in the rocks. They are usually caught on large spinning rods and heavy leader to give you the best chance at catching them.

One might think that grouper in such shallow water would be smaller fish, and while some are, some of the biggest grouper we catch come from these minor depths. Fish up to 15 pounds are not unusual. Shallow water grouper fishing in Florida is one of the coolest ways to target and harvest grouper species without having to venture far offshore to do so.
